Full description of the book Bethany College in 1850- The Diary of J.W. Carter:This long forgotten diary shows that college students have changed little throughout the years! Friendship and romance, conflict and intrigue are woven into the daily life of Jesse Woodward Carter in the years preceding the civil war. Famous professors, infamous pranks, and stories of young men being patiently molded for greatness by one of the most inspiring leaders of the time, Alexander Campbell, emerge from the pages of the diary. This diary will be familiar with anyone who has ever walked the hills of Bethany, and passed those sweet days between adolescence and adulthood in this beautiful place.
About the author Janice Garrison ShepherdJanice was born in a small village on Long Island. She graduated from Bethany College in West Virginia in the early 70's and then lived in New York City, getting her masters from Columbia University. After leaving New York she and her young family lived in many places throughout the U.S. and the world, including New Orleans, Egypt, Houston and Abu Dhabi, where her diverse international students included the grandchildren of the ruler, Sheikh Zayed. After returning to the U.S. in 1995, she settled in the mountains of West Virginia, about 3 hours south of Bethany. Here she dedicated her time to teaching two diverse subjects- reading and skiing- and trained and volunteered as an EMT and firefighter in her community. The highlight of her career, however, involved returning to Bethany as an assistant professor to teach courses in the education department from which she had graduated. She is now retired and lives on a small farm in the mountains with family, gardens, and tiny goats. Here she enjoys genealogy, writing, and heading off now and then to renew her wanderlust of the past. "Bethany College 1850- The Diary of J.W. Carter" was born out of her love of genealogical research. To her surprise, she found that she had relatives who had attended the college 100 years before her, some of whom had married into the family of the founder. While researching their experience, she found Carter's diary, which was not only a firsthand account of Bethany in the mid 1800's, but which also portrayed a timeless story of the lives of students during their college years. The classic story of professors, pranks, friendships and romance was one she felt had to be shared and compared with fond college memories of our own era.
